Welcome to Baltimore

So this Memorial Day Weekend (which isn't over yet!) has been relaxing so far. With another day off ahead, I have decided to reflect and add a media related idea! So while down in New Jersey for my cousin's graduation party I was mingling with family and catching up and whatnot. One of my cousins, works for the NYPD down in the Bronx. He works in narcotics and usually has a crazy story or two for us. This got us into a discussion about the television show The Wire. He says it is the closest television portrayal of his job that he has ever seen. My boyfriend has seen seasons 1-4, (there are 5 all together) and I have seen none. So, this conversation has now launched my own Wire marathon that started today. I am halfway through season 1. I keep asking my boyfriend, "Is Baltimore really like that?" and I keep having to reaffirm that I understand what is going on, but so far so good. So this leads me to my question (finally!) are television shows that portray what is really happening better for the American psyche or should we just stick to Glee? I mean I know I've picked two polar opposite shows, and I have a raised a question that is multi-facetted, but if you do narcotics work 7 days a week for 40+ hours a week, do you really want to go home and watch a tv shows that mimics your life for entertainment?

Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose!

Quite possibly one of the best television shows on right now is Friday Night Lights. If you haven't watched it, please please please do yourself a favor, go and get Netfilx immediately and watch the first 2 seasons on Nextflix instant. You will thank me, I promise. The 4th season is currently only being shown on Direct TV channel 101, but NBC will air the whole season later this year. It gives me faith that good television can be life changing, and make you feel like you actually want to live in Texas. ( I apologize to anyone from Texas reading this, I'm a New Englander... who lived in Oklahoma [BOOMER SOONER] and went to Dallas a total of 3 times and knew that I never, ever, wanted to back to Texas again... so please don't take it personally). I am sucked in, and I want Coach Taylor to get the team together and work a miracle... I wish I could be a part of those Friday night games under the lights that this show somehow makes magical week after week. Just listen to me, watch the show, and have your life pleasantly changed.

Big Love, On Demand, and Swansea MA

I moved to Swansea. It's a quaint town that I didn't know existed until about 4 months ago. My apartment is quite cute, and is two levels which is amazing. Swansea is super close to Rhode Island, which I am looking forward to exploring. We neighbor Somerset, and Fall River. I live on a peninsula now, and I can see the water from my bedroom! I love it. We still need decorations, and curtains but its getting there. Now because I've moved to Swansea, I've had to give up Direct TV for Comcast and On Demand. This has enabled me to start watching Big Love, an HBO show all about polygamy and Mormons in Utah. I absolutely love this show and if you haven't watched it, you can On Demand! Oh and because of this, I have started to read Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer. I have very wide and varied tastes, and moving seems to have just broadened by horizons. Funny how that works.

World Series, Game 6

So I'm sitting in my classroom, awaiting my professor to get here and all I can seem to think about tonight is the pulled pork in my fridge that is calling my name across many miles, a beer, and the baseball game tonight. I know I have a test to do, and probably more discussion questions, and perhaps no internet at my new apartment... but all of this is alright because there is baseball on tonight. I am hoping beyond hope that my new domestic partner (aka living with boyfriend) goes out and gets shredded cheese and possibly sour creme for my tacos tonight, to go along with the baseball game. I can't wait.

'holding, number 33. 10 yard penalty. Repeat 3rd down.

Day 2

I just love football. I love september. The start of school, purchasing books, school supplies, cooler temperatures, and the knowledge that across america high schools, colleges, and the pros are gearing up for another football season. I love the competition. I also love that my weekends take on a continuous routine of homework, college football Saturdays, and NFL Sundays. I love the clothing and the food that goes along with football as well. What's better?? You don't even have to worry about missing a game! There are multiple games on at the same time on the same day every week! No matter where you are, you can get football on television, radio, and the web every Sunday during the NFL season. Without fail there is always a local bar serving $1.00 pizza's and .25 cent wings on game day. Bill Simon's always seems to write his best columns during football season (sorry to those who think otherwise). There is endless amounts of information flowing through cbs sports, espn, and other sports outlets about team match ups, hot players, injuries, and scandals going on in the NFL. I love, love, love football.

Don't Believe a Word

I'm not very good at blogging. All these people in the world have blogs and write about extraordinary things. Or at least they seem extraordinary to me. Even movies have taken to representing the journey one goes through about writing a blog on the internet. Julie & Julia for instance is all about someone who cooks a recipe a day from Julia Child's cookbook, and writes about it. I can do that. I can try to do that. I seem to have come to a road block however. I don't feel like I have anything worth blogging about. So let this be my vow, to now blog about things I like or find interesting. At least one a day. I think that would be something I could try and do. I suppose it will be marginally regionalized, and all my topics will surely have a wide spectrum. However, I feel that perhaps finding something I enjoy (and something different) everyday, will give me a little boost of joy at the end of everyday. And now, on with the show.

Day 1
Tuesdays=Trivia Tuesdays.

I love trivia. I really do. I like getting a group of friends together to have a beer, have two for one pizza at the British Beer Company, and play trivia with a room full of strangers. It's competitive. It's funny. It gets intense at points... like when you have to wager points on the last questions that can make or break your whole team's night! I just can't say enough about having your friends congregate at the same place, same time every-week, and having fun.
